How to Pass Your Driving Theory Test

Your theory test is made up of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section. The multiple-choice section consists of 50 questions about road rules and regulations. You will have 57 minutes to answer them all correctly. Once you’ve completed the multiple-choice portion of the exam, it’s time to move on to the hazard perception part. This is a computer-based video assessment which tests your ability to identify potential hazards on the road as quickly as possible. You must score 44/75 points or higher in order for your theory test results to be considered successful. 

You don't have to worry about memorizing every single road rule and regulation—that's not what this exam is about! Instead, focus on understanding how different scenarios may affect other drivers and how different driving situations require different responses from drivers. Having an understanding of how things like speed limits, distractions, weather conditions, etc., can influence driver behavior is more important than memorizing specific regulations by heart. 

 

To prepare for your driving theory test, we recommend reading through official study materials provided by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). These materials include detailed explanations of all aspects of driving as well as practice questions so that you can get used to what types of questions will be asked during your actual exam. Additionally, there are also many helpful online resources that can help guide you through studying for both sections of your theory test.
